LPGA golfer Natalie Gulbis will retire from her competitive playing career at the end of the season, she wrote in a first-person account Thursday on Golf.com.
Stating she was making the 332nd start of her LPGA career, at the Gainbridge LPGA at Boco Rio, the 37-year-old Gulbis wrote, "I will be making the first start of my final LPGA season."
Gulbis has won only one event as an LPGA player, the Evian Masters in 2007, before that event became a major tournament on the circuit. She also was a member of three U.S. Solheim Cup-winning teams.
Lingering back injuries have limited her practice time during a pro career that began in 2001 at the age of 18. In 2019, she made the cut once while playing in only eight tournaments.
"I can't give my best unless I play regularly," Gulbis wrote. "If I can't give my best, I don't want to be out there. I'm a professional athlete. I have pride."
Born and raised in Sacramento, Calif., Gulbis played one season at the University of Arizona before turning pro. While developing a lucrative modeling career and landing a spot in the 2012 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, Gulbis enjoyed modest success on the LPGA tour.
She earned more than $1 million in earnings on the LPGA money list in 2005, and Gulbis finished in the top 10 of four straight majors from the end of 2005 to the start of 2006.
