TOKYO, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Lasha Bekauri claimed the first Olympic gold medal for Georgia at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics when he triumphed in the men's judo -90kg category.
Meanwhile, Chizuru Arai grabbed the sixth gold in judo for the host nation.
In the final of men's -90kg, the 21-year-old Georgian beat Eduard Trippel of Germany by a waza-ari in regular time. Davlat Bobonov of Uzbekistan and Krisztian Toth of Hungary shared bronze medals in the category.
The women's -70kg semifinal saw an intense battle between Arai and Madina Taimazova of ROC (Russian Olympic Committee). After 12 minutes and 41 seconds of additional time, Arai claimed the victory by an ippon, the latter had to leave the tatami with swollen right eye swollen.
Arai scored a waza-ari over Austrian Michaela Polleres to win in the final.
Taimazova and Sanne van Dijke of the Netherlands gained bronze medals in the division. China's Sun Xiaoqian was eliminated in the round of 32.
