Trump says U.S. delays strikes on Iran's energy sites for 5 days
U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that he had ordered the military to delay strikes on Iranian power plants and energy facilities for five days after what he called "productive" talks with Iran.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said the two sides had held "very good and productive conversations" over the past two days aimed at resolving hostilities in the Middle East.
Iran denies having talks with U.S.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Monday denied having negotiations with the United States, the country's official IRNA news agency reported, reversing U.S. President Donald Trump's earlier claim that Washington had reached "major points of agreement" with Iran and is in contact with "a top person."
Friendly countries recently sent messages to Iran indicating Washington's desire to begin talks on ending the war, but Iran has not responded, the IRNA reported, citing Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei.
Baghaei said Tehran's stance on the Strait of Hormuz as well as its conditions to end the war have not changed, the IRNA reported.
2 killed after Air Canada plane hits fire truck at New York airport
Two pilots were killed and dozens of others injured as an Air Canada Express flight collided with a fire truck when landing at New York's LaGuardia Airport late Sunday.
The plane, carrying 72 passengers and four crew members from Montreal, struck a fire truck from the Port Authority that was responding to a separate incident, said Kathryn Garcia, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Authorities confirmed that the pilot and copilot were killed, and about 40 passengers and crew members were taken to local hospitals, some with serious injuries.
EU announces provisional application of Mercosur trade deal from May 1
The European Commission said on Monday that the trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and four countries of Mercosur, a South American economic and political bloc, will be provisionally applied from May 1.
The Commission said it has notified Paraguay, the current holder of Mercosur's rotating presidency, completing the final procedural requirement for the deal's provisional application. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic described the move as an important signal of the bloc's credibility as a global trading partner.
The EU reached a political agreement in December 2024 with four Mercosur countries - Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay - on a partnership expected to eliminate duties on more than 90 percent of goods traded between the two sides.
